Sailed So Well

The wind filled every sail we raised
at the first light of the day
We traced a silver pinfish flight
the length of Tampa Bay

We put Anna Maria Island astern
and mounted the open sea
No pelican soared, nor marlin ranged
that ever felt more free

And we sailed so well
anyone would say
We sailed so well
yesterday

Fueled by the fire of a western wind
we sang the sun goodnight
then hushed as every star there is
turned darkness diamond-white

Was it the time we put in Venice Inlet
or was it Boca Grande?
The sun was setting in golden wine
and you reached to touch my hand
The gown slipped off your shoulder...
