Play the song (MP3)

Jack Bruce asked Pete Brown to write lyrics for a song about Charles Mingus; Brown instead wrote a poem about Charlie Parker (which became "Bird Alone"). I like to think that this is what Jack really wanted.

It's My Own (Chazz's Tune)

I can dig what the poet wrote about his art:
"Bitter–it's bitter. But
I like it
because it is bitter and because it's my heart."

I'm not a professor on the radio
No First Tambourine in Jordan's minstrel show
It's my own

If I hear different notes than Miles, Duke, and Art
You'll miss it; resist it. But
I like it
because it is bitter and because it's my heart

While you won't hear my music on the Hit Parade
If I don't play the rhythm that my fathers played
It's my own

Está sobre la vida y
sobre los muertos y
sobre bueno y
sobre malvado.
Está enojado.

I can dig what the poet wrote about his art:
"Bitter–it's bitter. But
I like it
because it is bitter and because it's my heart."

Now if I explain what I see through my eyes
Don't construe it to mean that I apologize
It's my own
